Choosing A Good Preparatory School
Since you have already decided to send your child to a preparatory school, the next decision is a more crucial one : “Which school should I send him to?” Before you make that decision, you may want to go through the following steps:
- Have a discussion with your child – The final decision is as important to your child as it is to you. Bear in mind that your child will be the one spending time in the chosen school, so ensure that you listen to your child. Have an open discussion so that you have a better understanding of his plans and career path for you to make a better decision.
- Set your requirements – You know your education priorities for your child. You know what your child expects. List out these expectations or requirements in order not to miss anything.
- Gather information – Information may come from friends, families as well as through the internet as many schools these days have their own websites. Anything that needs to be clarified can be done via a simple phone call to the school’s admissions or even directly to the principal.
- Short list the schools – Once you have a clear idea of what sort of school you are looking for, it is so much easier to short list the schools. A list of 3-5 schools with the best fit will be the most ideal as a longer list does not necessary mean a good thing as it will make the decision harder and take up a longer time for you to visit these schools.
- Visit the schools – Pay a personal visit to each of the school on your list. Where possible, bring your child along so that he can observe and experience the environment and cultures of the schools.
Once you have done all of the above, it is time to sit down with your child and go through the pros and cons of each school. Always remember that the final decision will have a big impact on your child’s happiness and future, so it is essential to take some time to make that decision TOGETHER WITH your child.
